IPC Milepost 2 - Class 3
Treasure - Autumn 2010
Item added: Friday, 10 September 2010
Over the next term Class 3 will be following a unit of work on a theme which focuses on archaeology, called 'Treasure'.
Each unit of work is based around specific targets derived from the learning goals for one or more of the subjects. During this unit we will be focusing on History, Art, Geography and Technology. We'll also be developing our understanding of the world.
International, ICT and Society targets will also be met integrally through these study areas.
In History, we'll be finding out:
- how archaeologists and historians excavate and write about treasure from the past;
- how different societies have made treasured items and what has happened to them;
- about some of the stories written about how people act when they want treasure;
- how the value of an object can be connected to its rarity or sentimental value instead of monetary value.
In Art, we'll be finding out about:
- how artists and craftsmen and women from different countries have made treasured items;
- how we can make models and representations of valuable items;
- about different opinions, including our own, about treasured works of art.
In Geography, we'll be finding out:
- how maps help us to locate the treasures of the world;
- how the physical landscape of a country affects natural resources and the activities of the people who live there.
In Technology, we'll be finding out:
- how to design, plan, make and evaluate our own items of treasure.
We'll also find out how we can use ICT to explore and record our information and how different cultures value and preserve different things.
This term, in Science lessons, the children will be following a unit on 'Keeping Warm', all about temperature and for the second half term, Rocks and Minerals which ties in really well with this topic on archaeology.
In RE they will first be exploring a unit on Christianity which is all about 'God and Creation' and then after half-term, a topic on 'Responses to the Natural World'.
In PE, we will be following units on African rhythm and beat, and Tennis.
If your child has some work to research please help them - but without actually doing the work! If you have the chance to further their interest in the ideas of this theme please take it - but your enthusiasm and interest are most important.
In particular, you might want to help your child develop their understanding of 'treasure' by talking with them about items that are special to you and about some of the items you have collected in the country in which you are now living.
Many thanks
