Class teacher
My name is Mrs Clare Anderson (email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
). I thoroughly enjoy my role as Class 3 teacher and am looking forward to an enjoyable and progressive year for all of us!
The beginning of the school day
Children should not need to come into school before the bell goes at 9am. They should assemble in the playground, stand still on the first bell and line up on the second. I will then lead them into class for registration. If your child is late for any reason, and the back door has been locked, they must enter the school via the front entrance, taking care to report to the school office to confirm their lunch arrangements.
Children need to be responsible for their own possessions and they have their own tray and peg for personal items. I would ask that the children try to keep personal effects to a minimum as these can get lost or broken and storage space is limited. Please could you also ensure that all personal belongings are named and hooks sewn into garments to assist in hanging them up properly, and that your child brings their own water bottle to school as it is disruptive to make trips to the water fountain during lesson time. If the children need to bring any money in, it should be brought into school in a named envelope in their blue book bag along with any letters and handed in at registration.
While the children in Class 3 are given many opportunities to share and present, we do not have a 'show and tell' session as such. Therefore, if the children wish to share something they need to arrange it with me in advance.
At the end of the day
The children will be dismissed by me from Class 3 and will leave the school through the playground corridor. I will always try to come out with the children whenever possible, and this may be an opportunity to arrange an appointment time to discuss matters concerning your child if necessary. Please note that it is not a requirement that children of this age be handed over directly to their guardians by the teacher.
All children are reminded that they are not allowed on the play equipment or to ride their bicycles on the playground after school, regardless of whether parents/carers are present.
Daily timetable
The day in school starts with registration, after which we have an assembly, with Sharing Assembly on a Friday when children share their learning with the rest of the school and those parents who wish to attend. Achievement certificates are also awarded in assembly on a weekly basis. We then have Numeracy and Literacy sessions each morning. The other curriculum subjects are covered in the afternoons, and we are all very excited about the new IPC (International Primary Curriculum). RE, PE and MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) will be taught independently, also in the afternoons.
Reading
The children should always have a Reading Record book in their book bags in which you are asked to make comments after each regular reading session with your child at home. The children are expected to read for at least 10 minutes each day. They are grouped into threes for weekly Guided Reading sessions for which they will be expected to read a prescribed amount of pages each week in preparation for the next session, and there is a display on the classroom wall with page numbers for the children to check where they should be. This will also be recorded in their home learning books on Fridays.
Home Learning
The home learning exercises are designed to support your child's development and it will be hugely beneficial if you can encourage and guide your child as much as possible. Consistency between home and school in supporting this is valuable and vital. If you need any guidance on how best to support your child in their home learning, please ask me.
Home learning will be set on a Friday and handed in on a Thursday, in order that any marking can be done and returned on Friday. The children will be given tasks which relate to their current learning at school. Both the instructions and the actual work will be in their green A4 book. Spellings follow a system in line with high frequency words in common use for the child's age and reading level and will be set on a Friday to be tested the folowing Thursday, with a lesson on those spellings taught on the Monday morning to consolidate their learning of them. Multiplication tables tests will be held on a Thursday morning. There is a table in the back of each child's home learning book charting the progression in both these areas. Other tasks may be set during the week if they require the child to bring something to a particular lesson.
Please ensure that you check and sign the homework diary each week to ensure that you are aware of the tasks, and that they are carried out. It is essential that the home learning book is kept in the child’s book bag at all times.
Behaviour: Golden Time
Golden Time is a fixture in the weekly timetable and is a time when children can enjoy games and activities with their friends which are available only at that particular time. Golden Time is a core part of the whole school behaviour system, which works well because of the warning strategy and the consistency of implementation. The rules were formulated by the whole school and reflect the high expectations that we hold for behaviour at Barton.
The behaviour system is based on owning Golden Time, and the each child owns thirty minutes of this at the beginning of the week. If they are spoken to three times because their behaviour is not in line with the agreed rules, their name is moved from under the sun to under the warning cloud. A further reminder will see their name moved under the rain cloud which means that five minutes of that week’s Golden Time is lost. In the rare event that they need a further reminder that day, then their name is recorded in a book in the Head Teacher's office. If their name is recorded in this book three times over a period of time, a letter will be sent home. They not able to lose more than twenty-five minutes of time and thus will always have at least five minutes of Golden Time on a Friday.
